Our picks for the weekend: Halloween and the first fireworks

Free Halloween parties in the park, a Supertato storytime, Timperley's own fireworks on Halloween night and a spider hunt on Sunday, mostly free and close to home.

Published .

Halloween falls on Saturday, the last weekend of half-term, and the first big fireworks nights are either side of it. These are five things worth getting out for, most of them free and within 15 minutes of Timperley, plus one for if it rains and one to book now.

There are still no trams through Timperley, Sale or Altrincham until the end of Sunday. Express buses run instead and tram tickets are valid on them.

Free, Saturday 11am to 2pm. The Friends of Broomwood Park put on a bouncy castle, face painting, big garden games and food, with a fancy-dress contest. It’s outdoors, so dress for the weather. Donations towards future park events are welcome.

Free, Saturday 11am, no booking. A trick-or-treat Supertato story session for little ones at B For Butterfly Books in Sale, a few steps from Brooklands. Just turn up.

Halloween at Park Wood (free spooky fun) Park Wood, Wythenshawe · 15 min Sat 31 Oct, 12-4pm; storytelling 12.30-2pm, lantern making 2-4pm; moves indoors to Brownley Methodist Church if wetFree

Free, Saturday 12 to 4pm, free tickets on Eventbrite. Face painting, nature trails, storytelling from 12.30pm and lantern making from 2pm in Park Wood. If it’s wet, everything moves into Brownley Methodist Church.

Saturday 5 to 8pm, adults £6, under-18s £4, under-3s free. Timperley’s own fireworks on Halloween night, run by St Hugh’s PTA. Tickets are online only, sales close on Friday 30 October, and it sold out last year, so don’t leave it.

Free, Sunday 2 to 3pm. Pick up a spider map between the play areas in Stamford Park and hunt them down. Fancy dress is encouraged, and the play areas are right there afterwards.

On Saturday evening, The Light Stop in Altrincham is a free warm-up stop for trick-or-treaters, with party games, a bouncy castle and sausage sandwiches, 5 to 7.30pm. Altrincham’s Count-Alty Halloween trail in shop windows runs until Sunday.

If it rains

Sunday 11am and 2pm, selling fast. The CBeebies favourite plays his gently funny songs with his guitar and animations on screen, about an hour with no interval, for ages 3 and up. Book soon: it was selling fast when we last checked.

Book now, before it goes

Next Friday, 6 November: a bonfire, three displays and a drone light show at Bowdon’s cricket club, 10 minutes from Timperley. The children’s fireworks at 7pm and the drone show suit little ones best. It sells out most years. Every display is on our Bonfire Night picks.

Everything else on this weekend is on this weekend’s page, and the whole week on our October half-term page.
