Real reindeer are rarer at Christmas events than they used to be. Some organisers have stopped bringing live animals, and rules on moving animals to stop disease spreading kept some herds at home last year. So we only count an appearance when the organiser says live reindeer are coming this year, and list reindeer trails and shows separately.
Herds can be withdrawn at short notice, so check the organiser's page on the day you go.
Questions parents ask
Where can we see real reindeer near Altrincham and Sale?
The nearest to Timperley are Reindeer Day at Lowe's Farm Shop (Byley, Sat 5 Dec, 35 min), Magical Woodland at Christmas at Blakemere (Sandiway, Fri 20 Nov, 40 min) and Santa's Secret Forest (Ince Blundell, Sat 21 Nov, 60 min).
Is there a reindeer parade near Sale or Altrincham this year?
We haven't found a reindeer parade confirmed for 2026 near Sale or Altrincham. Wilmslow's switch-on has had one in past years, but the council hasn't said whether reindeer are coming this time. We'll add any that are announced.
Why are there fewer real reindeer at Christmas events?
Some organisers have decided not to use live animals, and rules on moving animals to stop disease spreading kept some herds away last year. Appearances can change late, which is why we list only those confirmed for this year and say when we last checked.
Can you feed or stroke the reindeer?
It depends on the event: at some you can stroke them or help feed them, at others they stay in a pen to look at. Each listing says what the organiser allows.
